Description

The sculpted Theatre of Aixoni is a large scale sculpted urban landscape in the Municipality of Glyfada, Athens. In its birth, in the early 1980's it hosted a number of very important cultural events but has gradually declined to become today a semi-abandoned space.

Oval Studio together with the sculptor Nella Golanda have since the early 2016 inaugurated an effort to re-animate the space with a number of initiatives. As part of this effort the ApoMechanes Design Studio of UPenn, led by Ezio Blasetti and Danielle Willemns, was invited to produce a site specific projection on the work of Golanda, bringing new life to this unique public space. The work was presented in a wide audience in the summer of 2016.

Recently we have contacted anew the Municipality of Glyfada to suggest a 6-month artistic residency period on site with the intention of creating an ongoing body of work related to the original sculpture. Related to this request is the following text (Greek only)

Το γλυπτό Θέατρο της Αιξωνής είναι ένα έργο μοναδικό. Μοναδικό τόσο στην σύλληψη του, όσο και στην υλοποίηση του. Σχεδιασμένο από την Νέλλα Γκόλαντα στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 80', το Γλυπτό Θέατρο κυριολεκτικά φύεται στους πρόποδες του Υμηττού και συνδιαλέγεται με το Αττικό τοπίο.

Πρόκειται για έναν χώρο πολυδιάστατο, πολυμορφικό. Από πολλές απόψεις είναι ένα έργο πρώιμο της εποχής του, που ξεφεύγει μονοσήμαντων προσδιορισμών και κατηγοριοποιήσεων. Όπως μαρτυρά το ίδιο του το όνομα πρόκειται για ένα δημόσιο χώρο, έναν τόπο, ένα θέατρο, ωστόσο γλυπτό, πλαστικό, ρηξιγενές, που εγκυμονεί μια ενέργεια πύρινη, δημιουργική.

Δεν συνιστά συνεπώς το Γλυπτό Θέατρο Αιξωνής απλώς μια πλατεία ή έναν χώρο παραστάσεων - θεαμάτων όπως αυτά τα έχουμε συνηθίσει στην κοινή πρακτική της πόλης. Δεν χρήζει σκηνικής υποστήριξης, ούτε όμως είναι και το ίδιο σκηνικό. Το έργο της Γκόλαντα είναι εν τη γενέσει του ολοκληρωμένο, συνάμα ατελές και ανοικτό - δεν υποδέχεται απλώς την καλλιτεχνική δημιουργία αλλά συμμετέχει ενεργά σε αυτήν, δημιουργώντας αμφίδρομες σχέσεις μεταξύ χώρου, δημιουργού και θεατή.

Ένα έργο ειδικού χαρακτήρα χρήζει συχνά και ειδικής μεταχείρισης και προσοχής. Σε μεγάλο διάστημα στην διαδρομή της ζωής του μέχρι σήμερα το Γλυπτό Θέατρο της Αιξωνής έτυχε κακομεταχείρισης, όχι με την έννοια του βανδαλισμού, που σε έναν βαθμό θα μπορούσε να είναι παραδόξως συμβατός με την προγραμματική του συνθήκη, αλλά με την έννοια της α-χρηστίας, δηλαδή της μη-ενεργοποίησης. Για αυτό το γεγονός δεν επιρρίπτονται σήμερα ευθύνες, στον βαθμό που αυτό υπήρξε κυρίως το αποτέλεσμα μιας άγνοιας ή παράλειψης.

Το γεγονός παραμένει, πως το Γλυπτό Θέατρο της Αιξωνής αποτέλεσε μια σπουδαία στιγμή στην σύγχρονη ιστορία της πόλης και ένα ορόσημο τόσο για την δημιουργό του όσο και για τέτοιου είδους μελλοντικές πρωτοβουλίες. Η επανένταξη του στην ζωή της πόλης με τρόπο που σέβεται το όραμα της Γκόλαντα σαν ένα δοχείο καλλιτεχνικής δημιουργίας, σαν ένα εργαστήρι για τις Τέχνες, είναι επιτακτική και απολύτως εφικτή.

Description

( NKH : Nürenberg Konzert Haus )

The new Concert House of the city of Nurenberg is rather an extension to the existing Concert House, the MeistersingerHalle. Once completed the two building are meant to operate in a rather complementary way. The existing 1970's building of the Meistersingerhalle is itself a notworthy architecture of modernist aspirations and a semi-brutalist expression.

The submission for the first phase of the competition was restricted to drawings and a 1:1000 scale physical model. The size and shape of the concert hall and the relation of the overall building to the existing Meistersingerhalle and its surroundings have been two significant parameters for the design. The interior is organized around a typical shoe-box, rectilinear hall and builds outwards to host the main public program (lobby and entrance) towards the main plaza on the North and the various artist and rehearsal rooms as well as office and storage space on the South. A light connection is established with Meistersingerhalle on the ground floor, leaving the two building to function either separately or as one.

The final expression of the building is dynamic, yet subtle. Two sides of the building remain straight, while the other two lean forward to create a visual and programmatic dialogue with the existing building and the entrance plaza on the front. The design of the plaza itself follows the design of the building in a move away from the current "canonical" arrangement towards a more dynamic organization.

Description

The significance of the Bamiyan Cultural Center surpasses its pure functional use. Designed to stand within the rich cultural context of the Bamiyan Valley, during a period of continuous political turmoil and social upheaval, it carries a strong symbolic weight. A symbolic weight that has a twofold expression :

The first and more direct is to announce the building as an incubator of hope for the local community, a shelter for culture and tradition, a middle ground to negotiate peace and forge the path for political stability. The second is to highlight and reinforce the agenda of the 1972 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and National Heritage. The Bamiyan Cultural Center will bring its visitor to the awareness of universal cultural values that transcend time, national borders, ethnic identities.

In the case of the Bamiyan Cultural Center, Architecture is called upon to speak for both the immediate present and the distant past and future, to integrate local values and cultural habits while putting forward a design that is up-to-date and reaches its global audience.The Bamiyan Cultural Center rests in-between the local and the universal, in-between the time of the present and a non-time, the time of a continuous presence, of the deep history of the Monuments.

In our proposal we wish to incorporate these dualisms through the blending of two distinctly different design approaches. One that forms a clear dialectic with the transcendental context of the Valley , and one that ties the building back to the city, in terms of scale and spatial relationships.

Facing the Budha Cliffs the building assumes an austere expression - one that does not compete with the Monuments yet borrows from them its critical characteristics : a sense of verticality and a puncuation of the facade. On the opposite side the building breaks down in volumes that respond to the programmatic requirements and relate more directly to their immediate surrounding.

By means of ramps and intermediate plateaus, the building spine unfolds as a continuous descent from the upper to the lower elevation of the site, adopting in this manner its longitudinal form. It adapts to the site and at the same time forces the immediate landscape of the site to adapt and respond to its interior programmatic organization.
