Culture / Competition / Petriplatz

The Petriplatz Archaeological Visitor Center will be a building unique of its kind for the city of Berlin.

Built on the ruins of a gothic church and a Latin School the new center is comprised of two major areas : one is the Archive, where ruins from the site but also from other excavation areas will be stored and exposed temporarily and a series of laboratories and research facilities of non public mainly character. As the interstitial space of both, the relative small exhibition area of the Visitor’s center brings the public and non public aspects of the program together.

The building hovers above the ground sitting on concrete pillars; the heavy, brutalist concrete box housing the Archive is juxtaposed with the light translucent glazed surface of the laboratories.
